What if your students ask you: Who are the Uyghurs? What is their place in the history of Northwest China? What precipitated the July 09 “riots” in Urumqi? What is life like today for Uyghurs and other Muslim groups who live along China’s ancient Silk Road? Why did the U.S. refuse to repatriate innocent Uyghurs being held at Guantanamo Bay? This resource packet was prepared in conjunction with a workshop that included a discussion with University of Washington Professor Stevan Harrell who answered these questions and focused on ethnic relations in Northwest China today. Workshop participants also journeyed along China’s ancient Silk Road through the lens of a 21st century camera. Tese Wintz Neighbor, Senior Director of Professional Development at the World Affairs Council, shared her photos and observations from her 23-day odyssey in April of 2010 along this route. This comprehensive 78-page packet includes maps, articles, timelines, books, curriculum, and STEM resources focusing on the Uyghurs, Islam in China, and the Silk Road.
